What it Means for People with IDD

Summary

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience the aging process just like everyone else, but often with unique challenges that require specialized understanding and support. As individuals with IDD grow older, they may face age-related health changes earlier, experience increased support needs, and require strategies to maintain their independence and quality of life. It is essential that caregivers and professionals understand the aging process in the context of IDD, promote healthy aging, and recognize when additional supports are needed.

Aging with an intellectual and developmental disability is a complex and often overlooked topic. Many individuals with IDD experience premature aging, yet the resources and awareness to support them remain limited. This training developed by the National Task Group (NTG) Canada aims to bridge that gap by combining up-to-date research with interactive discussions and practical strategies. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how aging affects individuals with IDD, learn to recognize early signs of health changes, and develop skills to promote well-being and independence.

This workshop encourages participants to reflect on real-life scenarios, fostering empathy and a proactive approach to aging support.
